Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day is tomorrow! Whether you have made plans for the special day or are in a last-minute panic still trying to book somewhere, we have complied a list of where we think are the best 5 places to enjoy that Valentine’s Day outing she secretly wants, even if she says it doesn’t matter. Whether, it is for lunch or supper or not even on Valentine’s Day at al,l here are Rethinks top 5 restaurants in Herefordshire to check out before it’s too late:

1. Toi Et Moi – Abbey Dore

Toi Et Moi – Abbey Dore

What more could you want: small, cosy and French! Toi et Moi is the perfect place for a romantic Valentine’s evening. A small rural French restaurant run by French chef Cédric Lherbier, formerly of Les Copains d’Abord restaurant in Winchester and La Benjamine in South West France. The restaurant has outstanding views over the Golden Valley and is set within Holling Grange a grade II listed property. Situated between Abbey Dore and Bacton, this very secluded restaurant with open kitchen has 5 tables, a lounge area and offers relaxed dining. The food is French and seasonal. Many of the ingredients are sourced locally from Herefordshire.

To kick things off with we recommend the Pan-fried Scallops with Chorizo as a starter, followed by the Wye River trout filet, chicken and lemon jus as your main course and then to finish things off, we are big fans of the raspberry Soufflé & homemade Passion Fruit Sorbet. Bering a French restaurant, we strongly suggest cheese afterwards, which makes a perfect end to a wonderful and very romantic supper all swallowed down by a decent bottle of claret.

Prices are not the cheapest but well worth it for a very romantic evening with wonderful food. But we quick to book as it will fill up fast for Valentine’s Day!

2. No.3 – Ross on Wye

Ross on Wye

Ross on Wye

For something a little more lively this Valentine’s Day, why not try No.3 in Ross. A modern cocktail bar/restaurant in the heart of Ross, No.3 is the perfect place to get some cocktails in before supper for an intimate and relaxed experience that offers something different from many other restaurants around, for a very special valentines evening to enjoy and make a memorable experience.

For supper, we recommend the Hereford Hop Soufflé as a really lovely and local starter, swiftly followed by the grilled breast of duck and then for pudding the Honey and Yogurt Panna cotta and if you still not feel completely stuffed, a cheese board to end the evening with, obviously accompanied by some good quality wine from the well selected wine list (just don’t get carried away and drink too much and drive home).

Prices are very reasonable (depending on how many cocktails you have) and we highly recommend it as a strong contender for Valentine’s Day.

3. The Cellar Door – Hereford

The Cellar Door - Hereford

Again, if you are looking for something with a bit of a buzz about it for Valentine’s day, why not try the Cellar Door in the middle of Hereford. Recently opened and experiencing a roaring success the Cellar Door is a modern bistro café in the day and then a superb restaurant upstairs in the evening. Like No.3, you can get some terrific cocktails in to start with before moving up stairs for the evening to settle down with some delicious, locally sourced food.

For the starter we recommend the Salmon with Cauliflower Cous Cous, Toasted Almond and Local Apples, and then the Herefordshire Lamp Rump with roasted Pink with Braised Neck and Sweetbreads, Peas and Broad Beans and for pudding you can’t go wrong with the Pistachio Ice Cream.

Price are very good indeed at around £40 without drinks. However, if you are really looking to treat someone special this Valentine’s Day, why not try the five course tasting menu at £60 a head but well worth it to make that special day even more special!

4. The Kilpeck Inn – Much Dewchurch

The Kilpeck Inn – Much Dewchurch

If you are looking for something a little more pubby for a more relaxed evening for Valentine’s Day where beer is more appropriate than wine, we would highly recommend the Kilpeck Inn, in the beautiful village of Kilpeck, near Much Dewchurch about 8 miles South of Hereford.  The Kilpeck Inn is a rural country pub perfect for a relaxed cosy Valentine’s Day supper together next to a roaring fire.

To start off, Beer has to be in order and being Herefordshire we could only recommend one, a good pint of Butty Back from the Wye Valley Brewery. The Kilpeck also has a good selection of other beers and ciders too and wines by the glass. For drinks to start with we highly suggest getting by a fire and relaxing before having supper.

For supper we are strong advocates of the Wood Pigeon Breast with puy lentils, bacon, red wine jus and kale chips. For the main course we are big fans of Venison braised in red wine, chestnuts, parsnip mash, curly kale however, if you are wanting a bit more pub grub sort of food, then the sausages and mash with caramelised red onion marmalade gravy is a big winner.

We suggest sticking to the beer throughout supper and if you have had one to many prints of butty, the Kilpeck has a huge added benefit of rooms to stay in upstairs if needs be!

Prices are as you would expect for local, rural pub food so very sensible indeed around the £10-12 mark for a main course, so if you are looking for somewhere a little less pricey for Valentine’s Day then The Kilpeck is the perfect place for a very relaxed country evening by the fire.

5. The Stagg Inn – Titley, Kington

The Stagg Inn – Titley, KingtonIf you like the idea of a pub for Valentine’s Day but are looking for something a little more upmarket, then  the Stagg Inn in Titley near Kington is a winner. The Stagg Inn is a gastro pub and has won various awards for food and drink as well as being in the Herefordshire Dining Pub of the year in the Good Pub Guide 2016 and have twice won their National Award.

Food wise, there is a choice of several options including a special Valentine’s Day menu which is just a slight variation of the normal a la carte menu. Having not had the Valentine’s Day menu we are going to suggest the Hereford Snails to start with which come with watercress, mushroom, parsley and garlic croutons. For the main course, we absolutely love the Herefordshire beef fillet, caramelised shallots, green peppercorn butter, kale with chips and then for pudding we strongly suggest the Three Crème Brulees along with a cheese board to finish with.

In terms of prices, you are looking around £50 a head for food but we can promise you it will be worth it. The Special Valentine’s Day menu is £38.50 ahead so we would suggest that to save a little cash!
